CGA Honors Organizations-Equestriennes

Last weekend, as part of the CGA 40th Anniversary Celebration, the Equestrienne team performed. As always, the girls looked sharp. For a chance though, they did have a couple of horses that were a little higher strung than usual. I attribute this to the fact that it was a nice day and on Saturday morning, Culver Academy lets their horses out to play in the paddocks. The horses probably wanted to keep playing.

IEA Photography: Culver’s Annual Cupid Challenge

Last weekend, Culver Academies hosted their annual IEA Valentine’s Invitational: The Cupid’s Challenge. This two-day event is always a lot of fun as there are usually around 100 kids from 18-20 horsemanship programs in attendance. The program includes both Jumping and Dressage competitions for every skill level. Being an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) event, this show counts towards the point ranking systems that allows the participants to qualify for National Competition.

On Saturday, I attended and photographed the event, taking over 3,500 photos from 8:30am-6:30pm. As tired as I was, I kept reminding myself that many of the kids had been there since 6am for the schooling of the horses.

I’ve posted a few photos here. The rest of the photos are located by event class at:

Indiana Sports Photography: Culver Academy Horse Show Invitational

This past weekend, the Culver Academy Jumping teams hosted an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) invitational horse show at the Vaughn Equestrienne Center. Originally scheduled for two days, due to bad forecasted weather, the event was shortened to a single day with only a couple of visiting teams. Though the event was shortened, the Academy did a wonderful job of hosting it and everyone appeared to have a good time. And I hope you’ll agree with me that the horses were not only great performers but beautiful to watch and photograph. I’m a horse lover and was a trooper at Culver, so I tend to watch the horses more than the people.

I’m always so impressed with the students and teams at these horse events. It’s just a classy sport to watch and capture on film. The Academy students did well in the different events, taking several first places, seconds, and thirds. They should be proud of another great performance. I look forward to the big February event.

Culver Academy Graduation Photos: Honor Organization Performances

One of the first events of Culver Academy’s graduation weekend involved the performances of the Honor Organizations, which included the Color Guard, the CGA Silent Drill Team, the Equestriennes, the Four Gun Drill, and the Lancers. Originally scheduled for outdoors, I was looking forward to getting photos in natural light. The last time that I was able to shoot these groups outside was during the 2008-2009 school year. Unfortunately, Culver Academies had to make the decision to hold the performances indoors. The weather was nice so it was a bit of a surprise. I suspect that there was some fear of damaging the parade field before the final garrison parade. It rained a lot this past week, so I think the organizers made a good decision.

As always, the groups looked great and they changed their routines slightly from the performances over Parent’s Weekend and Alumni Weekend. In addition to different routines, the various teams honored their graduating seniors. It was classy and brought back some memories for me from when I was a senior in that same position 23 years ago.

Culver Academy Reunion Photos: Honor Group Performances

As a final wrapup to Reunion Weekend–a long, busy weekend for me–were the performances of Culver Academy’s Honor Organizations on Sunday afternoon. The cadets and coeds that make up the Equestriennes, Lancers, 4 Gun Drill, Silent Drill Team, and Girl’s Drill Team put on great shows. It was a nice end to a nostalgic weekend.

Culver Indiana Photography: Culver Academy Horses

There are a few things in life that Ginny and I can’t resist. Me, I can’t sit down on the couch without changing into comfy clothes. Ginny will never discard an email from J. Jill, Pottery Barn, or Crate and Barrel without first opening it to read it. (Thankfully, she doesn’t buy things too often.) Neither one of us can be near horses with a camera in hand without taking at least a few photos. During yesterday’s Tour de Max, one location that we shot the cyclists from was by Culver Academy’s paddock, which had the horses out for the morning. Following are some of the photos that we captured.

Culver Academy Polo Photos: CGA Polo vs. University of Michigan

Polo is back! For those who don’t know me, I was in Troop A when I attended Culver Academy. 20+ years later, I’m still a trooper at heart and love photographing horses. Tonight, the CGA Varsity Polo team hosted the girls polo team from the University of Michigan. Adding to my excitement of being a Friday and the first Polo game of the season is the fact that I shot tonight using a brand new Nikon D300s that arrived today. I was an anxious mess all afternoon waiting for the game. Just ask my wife. I couldn’t sit still.

Both teams played well with the CGA team taking an early lead, which they held the entire first half. During the second half, the University of Michigan team dominated. They held the lead until half way through the 4th quater. The Culver girls came back and ended up winning 11 to 9. I’ve posted some photos here; you can find several more at www.culverphotos.com.

Culver Academy Horsemanship Photos: Eqestrienne Performance

Another great performance for the CGA Equestriennes. Coach Lynn Rasch and the girls should be proud that they can pull together such great performances this early in the year. I’ve posted a few photos here though there are many more at www.culverphotos.com.
