Horsemanship Jumping-Fall Jump Show 2011

One of my favorite things to do is photograph horses. Photographing them during the jumping shows/tournaments is a lot of fun, though the lighting in the arena is so tricky. I’ve been experimenting with camera settings, lenses, and software-editing tools. I have finally found some combinations that I like. The Culver jumping team members do an amazing job at these tournaments. If you haven’t seen them compete, you should come out and watch them, as they perform well and represent Culver like true champions. And the horses aren’t too bad either!

Culver Academy Horsemanship Photos: Cupid’s Challenge 2010

This weekend, the Culver Academy JV and Varsity Jumping teams hosted the 2010 Cupid’s Challenge Horse Show. This is an annual show at Culver’s Riding Hall in which 7 or 8 teams teams travel to Culver to participate. I believe that Culver placed well overall, though with 14 classes competeting on both Friday and Saturday, I’m honestly not sure what the final results ended up being. I do know from talking with several of the parents and coaches from the visiting teams that the kids love this show and look forward to it each year. I’d like to recognize everyone that works in the Horsemanship Department for a great tournament, as this truly was a group effort on their part to put on this show. It is also worth noting that the Lady Equestrienne Team from Notre Dame graciously came down for the weekend to assist.

I’ve posted a few of my favorite photographs here; there are over a thousand more located on CulverPhotos at http://www.culverphotos.com/cupid2010

Culver Academy Photographer: Horsemanship Weekend- Equestriennes

There is something to be said about the beauty of a well cared for, well groomed horse in motion. This evening, I was fortunate enough to watch, what I believe was, the first performance of the 2009-2010 school year of the Culver Girls Academy Equenstrienne team. As they always done, the CGA Equestriennes put on a great show coreographed with music from the Lancer band. This was one of the events scheduled during the Vaugn Equestrienne Center dedication weekend. For those not familiar with the Equestriennes, they are an Honor organization dressage team made up of female riders enrolled in Riding at Culver Academy. They are the female equivalant of the Lancers which has been around Culver since the 1930s. I’ve posted some photos here but there are more at www.culverphotos.com. If you happen to be looking for better photos of the Equestriennes, please vist the Honor Organizations section on www.culverphotos.com and look at the photos taken from the outdoor performances last Spring. With natural, sunny light, these photos turned out wonderful.

Culver Academy Photographer: Horsemanship Weekend- Lancer’s

I think this was the first performance of the Honor organization of the Lancers of the 2009-2010 school year. Considering that approximately one fourth of the team is new this year, I think they did a great job.

For those of you that know me, the Lancers are near and dear to my heart as I participated on this team 20+ years ago when I was cadet at Culver. I remember alumni bragging about how straight their formations were. I wouldn’t dare do that with this team. Great job Lancers! For more photographs of this team, see www.culverphotos.com.

Culver Academy Photographer: Horsemanship Weekend- Horse Show

Today I photographed part of a horse show at Culver Academy in the newly renovated Vaughn Equestrienne Center. This show was put on as part of the dedication weekend for the center. In addition to shooting some great horse photos, which I’ve always loved doing, I got to see some friends who returned for the event. I last saw some of these folks when I was a trooper at the Academy. I hope to make it to two more events over the weekend. Here’s a small selection of some of my favorite shots. There are more photographs posted on www.culverphotos.com.
