2011 Culver Academies’ Fall Parents Weekend

Wow, what a busy weekend Fall Parent’s Weekend at Culver Academy was this year. In addition to the 2000+ photos that I took, the Academy has asked that I post their photos from the weekend as well. For me, this is a first, but I like it. For once, I’m able to post photos from events that were going on at the same time. In the galleries from the weekend, we have: Garrison parade, officer’s figure, classroom and candids, sports photos, Founder’s Day Retreat, the horsemanship activities, and the Honor Organizations to name a few.

I’ve posted all of the photos under one main heading called “2011 Fall Parent’s Weekend.” Within that category, there are several galleries, so finding specific photos should be easier.

I’ve posted a few of my favorites from the weekend here. Please visit,   http://www.culverphotos.com/2011fallparentsweekend  for all of the photos.

Fall Parent’s Weekend CMA Varsity Soccer vs. Portage

Over Fall Parent’s Weekend, the Culver Academy Boys Varsity Soccer Team played their last home game of the season against Portage. The weather was nice and the CMA Eagles played well. They won 3 to 1.

Culver Academy Honor Organizations

Last weekend, as part of Culver’s Reunion Weekend, the CMA and CGA Honor Organizations performed at the recently renovated Riding Hall. As one would expect this late in the year, all the groups looked and performed very well.

Culver Academy Reunion Weekend: Garrison Parade

On Saturday afternoon of Culver’s Reunion Weekend, Culver held a Garrison Parade, which includes the returning alumni. This year, unfortunately, the parade happened in the rain on a soggy field. With some uncertainty about whether or not the parade would happen and some earlier events falling behind schedule, things were a little disorganized, but you could tell the returning classes had a great time. This was also the parade at which the parade field was dedicated to Mr. Jim Henderson. It was a nice ceremony and appropriate for the class of ’86 that had returned for its 25-year reunion, as Mr. Henderson was the honored speaker at 86′s graduation. I know this because Ginny was one of the returning members. She enjoyed the entire weekend.

CMA Reunion Weekend: Gate Ceremony

As part of Culver Academy’s Reunion Weekend, Culver holds the Gate Ceremony where the more “seasoned” classes are invited to pass through the Iron Gate. This is a really nice ceremony that began 9 to 11 years ago at the request of one of the returning classes. Every year, this is a touching and emotional ceremony that honors the more veteran classes.

Culver Academy Photos: Pre-Senior Dinner Dance

On Friday night, Ginny and I went to campus to get some photos of the Academy seniors before they departed for their Senior Dinner Dance, which equivalent to most High School Senior Proms. A lot of parents show up to take pictures, too. We were on a mission to get a picture of a couple of students whose senior shots we had taken. It was fun for us, but it also made us think back on our own senior dinner dances. We concluded that they are much cooler now!

Culver Academy Garrison Parade: Parent’s Weekend 2011

Parents’ weekend on Sunday was a great day for Culver Academy’s Garrison Parade. The weather was nice. The boys and girls looked sharp. The band sounded good. The trucks all ran and were clean. And the horses, for the most part, behaved themselves. The parade was everything that you’d expect 8 months into the school year.

Culver Indiana Photographer: 2010 Lakefest

This past weekend, I took some photos at a few of the events during Culver’s Lakefest Weekend. I’ve posted several photos from the Miss Maxinkuckee Competition, Lakefest Parade, the Car Show, and the Talent Show at www.culverphotos.com/2010_lakefest

Culver Indiana Photography: Boys and Girls Club Auction

On June 18, we attended the Culver Boys & Girls Club auction event. This year, Ginny was once again heavily involved in the event. The CBGC board was kind enough to give her a plaque for her work on the auction event. This year, the theme was “A Night at the Speedway,” and I have to say that the way the auction committee transformed the Lay Dining Hall at Culver Academies was amazing. Carol Zeglis was in charge of decorating and she paid attention to every detail. She even wrapped the potted plants in checkered paper. There was a race track for wiggle machine races, which were hysterical. I have to admit that I particiated in the races. I have to get some of those machines for my nieces and nephews! Mary Szymusiak, who was in charge of check-in and check-out, raced against me. She beat me in the practice round, but I won the race round. Mary’s husband Jim did a great job of running the races and MCing the live auction at which Ginny won the Peyton Manning rookie jersey that Peyton autographed back in ’98! I wasn’t there during the live auction, as I was out checking on a friend’s house. As some of you may have heard, there was a bad storm Friday night. We lost power for about an hour, and then, when the generators kicked on, the dining hall was the only building in Culver with power. Thankfully, the guests stayed, and though the turnout was much lower than anticipated, all of the event organizers were happy with the results of the evening.

If you haven’t made a donation to the Boys & Girls Club in awhile, take the time to support the kids. And hopefully, we’ll see you at next year’s auction event! The planners of this year’s auction are already planning the theme for next year’s event. It’s sure to be great. In the meantime, check out some photos of the great food (provided by City Diner), the fantastic decorations and donations, and some of the people at the event.

Culver Academy Graduation Photos: Commencement

300_3157

The 2009-2010 Culver Academy school year comes to a close with the Final Formation and Graduation Commencement that was held last Sunday on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee. As part of the ceremony, the cadets proceed through the CMA Gate and the coeds walk through the CGA Arch. Once through, they are welcomed by a Legion Board member as they join the ranks of other Culver Alumn. As always, emotion runs high, as this celebration is both joyous and sad being the end of the seniors’ Culver (and high school) lives.

All totaled, I shot over 1500 photos before, during, and after the graduation ceremony. I tried to get a couple of photos of each student as they received their diploma and progressed through the Gate or Arch. I’ve only posted a few photos here. Others can be found at:

Before/After Ceremony- http://www.culverphotos.com/6-6_10_commencement_bf

Arch Ceremony- http://www.culverphotos.com/6_6_10_commencement_arch

Gate Ceremony- http://www.culverphotos.com/6_6_10_commencement_gate

Please note that both the Gate Ceremony photos and the Arch Ceremony photos are in the order that the students progressed through the Gate and Arch. If you are looking for a student who graduated later in the ceremony, look much later into the gallery.
