CMA Varsity Hockey vs. Shattuck

The CMA Varsity hockey game against Shattuck was an exciting game. CMA came out the victors with 4-2 score. I’ll be following all of the hockey teams this year and hope to keep you updated with photos and scores.

CGA Varsity Hockey vs. Windsor

The CGA hockey team has started off the season well. They won their game against Windsor (2 to 0) after playing hard and playing well as a team. I look forward to watching their season progress and taking more photos.

Indiana Hockey Photography: CMA Prep vs. Lake Forest Academy

On Sunday afternoon, I watched the Prep Hockey Teams from Culver Academy and Lake Forest Academy play one another at Culver’s Henderson Ice Rink. There has always been a rivalry between these two hockey programs, as the schools areonly a couple hours away and each school often gets kids that might have gone to the other school. (I recall that 25 years ago, I had friends at LFA and it was one school that I considered when looking at Culver.) As one parent described the rivalry to me a few days before the game- “We are their Shattuck”. What he meant by this was that Culver Academy is one of Lake Forest’s hardest compititors and the team that it strives to beat each year. It is the game of the season that defines how well their program is this year.

As expected, the game was high energy and fast action. It was a little on the brutal side with a lot of penalties and a few injuries. Overall, though, it was a lot of fun to watch both teams play their hearts out. Culver did not disappoint. Though they gave up the first goal of the game, they took the win at a score of 5 to 2.

Last weekend was Senior Night for the CMA Varsity Hockey Team at Culver Military Academy as they played against De la Salle. Before the game, there was a short recognition of the seniors and their parents under the life-size banners of each senior that I produced. (See earlier post.) I see some of these players in the penalty box where I shoot from, but it was nice to see them with their parents getting the recognition of their years in Culver hockey, something they can be proud of… to see them with the banners was icing on the cake.

The game was a fun game to watch with a lot of action. Culver easily won with a score of 6-to-3. I’ve posted some photos here. Additional photos are located at:

Indiana High School Hockey: CMA Varsity vs. Penn High School

The other night, the CMA Varsity Hockey team hosted Penn High School for a game played at Culver Academies. The game started interesting enough with Penn playing hard and scoring the first goal. With that, it appeared that Culver might have a struggle with the game. Culver regrouped and fought to win 6-3. It was an exciting game to watch with both teams playing hard. Indiana Hockey Photography: Culver Academy Varsity Hockey vs. JSerra Catholic Ice Lions

Last night, as part of Culver’s first annual Corn Cup Tournament, the CMA Varsity Hockey Team played the JSerra Catholic Hockey Team from California. It was an exciting game that could have gone to either team. JSerra started the game by scoring quickly in the first period; it was countered with Culver scoring a goal. Culver won the game, though JSerra made them work for the win.

Last night, the CMA Varsity Hockey Team played against Penn High School’s U19 Hockey Team on Culver Academy’s campus in the Henderson Ice Rink. The CMA Eagles played very well, easily winning 6-0. There were a good deal of penalties throughout the game on both teams. One of these days, I’ll understand what those are, but for now, I have to plead ignorance.

Overall, I’m finding the lighting at the rink to be lacking for ideal photos, but I’ve been editing these in a different way than I did last year, and I like the results much better. Using a low-light lens and high ISO setting helps, but I’d love it if the ice would cooperate with me. I guess you can’t have it all. Enjoy the pictures. Some of you might recognize Dustin Cowell, a friend of ours whose dad Danny works at the Academy. Amber Cowell is in some of the CGA hockey pictures. Both of them are great athletes and it’s a lot of fun getting their pictures!

Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CGA U19 Hockey vs. Ohio Flames

This weekend, the CGA U19 Hockey team hosting a tournament with 6 teams competing on Culver Academy’s campus. Shown below are some photos from the first game that featured Culver playing against the Ohio Flames. It was a great game, even though the girls could not pull off a win. Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA U16 Hockey vs. Mercer Chiefs

What a long weekend for the CMA U16 hockey team! Today was the fourth and final game for Culver Academy Eagles in their Christmas break Invitational Tournament. I feel sorry for all the teams having had to play four games in a weekend, but I feel especially bad for the Culver boys because Chirstmas vacation started for their classmates four days ago.

Culver Academy ended the weekend in the 3rd and 4th place brakets against the Mercer Chiefs who they played yesterday morning and lost to. Watching today’s game, I remembered how much fun these two teams were to watch against each other. Both teams played hard and showed great sportsmanship with very few fouls throughout the game. If I recall, Culver only had 2 or 3 penalities the entire game and there were times when the game would continue for 3-4 minutes without any whistle. It truly was fun to watch.

Having lost yesterday, Culver played well and dominated the entire game, bringing home a win. I’m proud of Culver, but the Chiefs still need to be recognized for their play. There are a few things about the Chiefs that I feel should be pointed out. First off, I believe that they were the smallest team to play in the tournament with only 12 kids. If you think about it, that is 216 minutes of hard, tournament play spread across 12 players. Secondly, due to concerns about the impending weather conditions, their goalie left last night or this morning and did not play in today’s game. Instead, their backup goalie played who did a great job. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Culver fan through and through. But, in today’s win, I don’t feel that it is appropriate to gloat. Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA U16 Hockey vs. Chicago Huskies

This afternoon, as part of the Culver Academy U16 Invitational Tournament, the CMA Eagles played the Chicago Huskies. For me, this game was a little different than all the other hockey games that I’ve photographed in that the game was played on the “B” rink at the Henderson Ice Rink. This was the first game that I’ve ever shot on the “B” rink and it posed some new challenges. Unlike the “A” rink, which is an NHL-sized ice rink, the “B” rink is an Olympic-sized ice rink, which means that it is a larger rink. Being larger meant that I had to get used to things as viewed through my zoom lens. I had to wait until their was action in the middle of the rink because my zoom wasn’t the best at reaching the far corners. Another difficulty that I faced was with the lighting. This rink is lit with a combination of incondescent and florescent lights, which required some tweeking of settings to get my photos to look right.

The game itself was a fun, exciting game to watch with both teams playing hard. Culver easily won the game, though I don’t think the Huskies should feel bad. If I had to guess, I suspect that the Huskies are not on the ice daily like the Culver Academy teams.
