CMA CGA Fencing Photos

Yesterday, I tried to photograph Culver’s fencing tournament that was hosted on Culver Academies’ campus. For me, fencing touranments have always been one of the most difficult things to photograph. I don’t find them difficult because of the lighting or action or other cameras related reasons. I have a hard time with fencing because I can not tell who is who. First, everyone wears the same thing with no school or club identifying characteristics on them. I never know if the person in the white body suit is an Academy student or not. To make things worst, once they put their masks down, there is no way of recognizing the students that I know as I can’t see their faces. If a student or parent would ever be willing to point out the Academy students during a fencing match, let me know. I could get much better photos.

Culver Academies Fencing Invitational

This past weekend, the CMA and CGA fencing teams hosted their annual fencing invitational, which brings several hundred kids attend from all over the Midwest to Culver. For this event, the Culver Academies’ Gymnasium is turned into a massive fencing arena with over 40 fencing “slips” set up in different areas so that 80-90 kids can compete simultaneously. It was a madhouse to try and track and locate the Academies’ students as every competitor essentially wears the same uniform. To make matters more difficult, some of the students had protective gear that covered their Culver Academy patch. I had a hard time ensuring that I was following the correct students.

Fencing: Junior Olympic Qualifier

Culver Academy Fencing Photos: Culver Fencing Tournament

Today, the Culver Fencing Teams hosted one of the largest fencing tournaments in the Midwest. With close to 200 kids competing in 20-30 different areas, this event was something to witness. I’ve never watched fencing, though I found it interesting. I’ve posted a few photos here; there are more at http://www.culverphotos.com/p1005382416 I apologize that there are not as many as I post for some events that I cover, but I found myself having a difficult time keeping track of the Academy students versus other teams, as everyone looked the same in their uniforms.
